Clos Fonta
Winery: Mas d'en Gil
Region: Priorat
Coupaje: Garnacha, Carignan (RED)
Vintage: 2014
Old vine Grenache and Carignan, the most precise representation of Mas d’en Gil terroir. Clos Fontà concentrates a rich aromatic pallet of ripe red fruit and Mediterranean spices with a hint of mocha, cocoa, and the minerality of a complex wine. It is bold but not over-made. The wood is perfectly integrated with enough freshness to balance its luscious fruit and spice.
Well balanced and meaty on the palate, with silky tannins and a superb concentration. Rich yet vibrant. A very long finish.
The vines for the "Clos Fontà" are up to 100 years old, giving immense character.
Only allowed to pair with the finest braised short rib, dry-aged cut of beef, a very fine foie gras on fresh baguette or Iberian ham.

Frances Gil founded Mas d'en Gil in the 19th century in Priorat. In 1931 the estate passed to the Barril family who renamed it Masia Barril and made a groundbreaking decision to start bottling their own wines. In 1998 the Rovira Carbonell family bought the estate and renamed it Mas d'en Gil, honoring the original founders. Today Pere Rovira runs the estate with the help of his daughter, Marta Rovira Carbonell (who introduced organic farming to the vineyards). Today, Mas d'en Gil covers 125 hectares of land in the southern part of Priorat. The vines (mostly Garnatxa and Carinyena with some Garnatxa Blanca) are planted in five valleys on steeply sloping, slate-based (llicorella) hillsides.
