Bellmunt

Winery: Mas d'en Gil

Region: Priorat

Coupaje:  Garnacha, Carignan & Cab Sauv (RED)

Vintage: 2016

The Mas d'en Gil Bellmunt red comes from the young vines of the vineyards planted in the Bellmunt Valley of the estate. The wine is a blend of Grenache and Carignan, aged for 10 months in a mix of 3,000 liter barrels, 1,500 L barrels, and 225 L barrels and then a further 12 months in bottle. It is open and vibrant, rich on the palate with a plethora of cherry and peach sensations coupled with mineral notes and the refreshingly fine sweetness of dark stone fruits. Pair this wine with flat iron or skirt steak grilled rare served with rice and beans.

Frances Gil founded Mas d'en Gil in the 19th century in Priorat. In 1931 the estate passed to the Barril family who renamed it Masia Barril and made a groundbreaking decision to start bottling their own wines. In 1998 the Rovira Carbonell family bought the estate and renamed it Mas d'en Gil, honoring the original founders. Today Pere Rovira runs the estate with the help of his daughter, Marta Rovira Carbonell (who introduced organic farming to the vineyards). Today, Mas d'en Gil covers 125 hectares of land in the southern part of Priorat. The vines (mostly Garnatxa and Carinyena with some Garnatxa Blanca) are planted in five valleys on steeply sloping, slate-based (llicorella) hillsides.
